About the Event
In 1998, Los Angeles City Hall was closed for a complete seismic retrofit. This retrofit included allowing the 454-ft building to move laterally up to 24 inches through the use of a base isolation system. City Hall is one of the tallest base isolated structures in the world.
The event will start with a tour of the seismic base isolation dampers, led by Nabih Youssef, Structural Engineer. Youssef Structural Engineers designed the structural retrofit and base isolation and is at the forefront of seismic engineering.
After the tour, we will have a Q&A with Liz Crosson, Director of Infrastructure for Mayor Garcetti.
We will then have a tour of City Hall led by a Mayor's Office Docent and end with lunch from Homeboy Cafe.
We will be going down into the basement so make sure to wear clothes toe shoes. Catering will be provided from Homeboy Cafe.
Participants are encouraged to use public transportation, no parking will be provided.
