About the Event
Come join ASCE YMF LA and Haley & Aldrich for a Boeing hosted tour of a historically known contaminated site, Santa Susana Field Laboratory (SSFL) that is currently going under demolition and remediation. The site consists of managing 2,850 acres of land owned by Boeing, NASA, and DOE to maintain storm quality standards set in place by the Los Angeles Regional Water Control Board in the site specific National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit. Since 1950 SSFL conducted research, development, assembly, disassembly, and testing of small scale nuclear reactors, rocket engines, and chemical lasers. The tour will consist of the history of the site’s testing and spills, the structural stormwater Best Management Practices (media beds, detention basins/ponds, sitewide conveyance system), stormwater treatment systems, and NASA test stands.
