Sun Valley Back to School Dream Big Event
It was perfect timing for Sun Valley Magnet School, in that their school’s Robotics teacher Elizabeth Felix had approached Flor Burrola, a Civil Engineer, for a presentation regarding engineering with the intention to motivate and inspire her students. After meeting with the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Los Angeles Young Members Forum (LA YMF), Sun Valley Magnet school was able to receive something more exciting than a presentation. Thanks to ASCE LA YMF and MacGillivray Freeman Films, the Magnet School was awarded approximately 200 tickets to see the Dream Big IMAX film screening at the California Science Center (CSC) IMAX theater and received full funding for the buses that transported 200 students, faculty and chaperones.
Sun Valley Magnet School is a Title 1 school that serves students in Grades 6-12. They arrived Wednesday, August 30, 2017 at the CSC rotunda and were greeted by Monica Morales, the Dream Big Committee Chair for ASCE LA YMF and Brian Phan, Vice-President and K-12 Outreach chair for ASCE LA YMF. The students entered CSC’s IMAX Theater with curiosity and excitement and the film did not disappoint. The Dream Big IMAX film celebrates the human ingenuity behind engineering marvels big and small, and reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people around the world. It also helped that the film included a section dedicated to underwater robotics in that Felix’s students were learning all about robotics!
After the film, Sun Valley students were able to explore the California Science Center general museum as well as the Endeavor Shuttle exhibit. Overall, the event was a huge success for ASCE LA YMF and Sun Valley Magnet School in getting students ready for the school year with a motivational start.
