Middle School Day - Engineers Week 2018

Engineers Week 2018 - Middle School Day took place on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s (LADWP) La Kretz Innovation Campus (LKIC) in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. LKIC is LADWP’s newest sustainability focused facility established to host various LA’s cleantech businesses and startups approved and sponsored by the LA Cleantech Incubator (LACI).

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Los Angeles Younger Member Forum (LA YMF) organized for four Middle Schools in the Los Angeles Area, including Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, Sun Valley Magnet School, Muscatel Middle School, and Nightengale Middle School to spend the day at LKIC learning about engineering. Middle School Day featured guest speakers Richard Harasick, the Senior Assistant General Manager and Director of the Water System for LADWP, Myles Bean, Propulsion Engineer at SpaceX, Kristina Swallow, ASCE National President and Matt Peterson, CEO of LACI. The students had a chance to take a group tour of the new LKIC facilities provided by Marlon Calderon in order to learn more about sustainable engineering happening in Los Angeles. The students were able to finish the day by completing different hands-on engineering activities such as building a wind-powered vehicle, a load bearing structure, as well as a simulated water filter system. Lunch was served at the end of the day in a park complete with playground right behind LKIC, and after eating the students were able to play on the jungle gym while they waited for their buses!
