Engineers Week - Girl Scouts Day 2019

For this year’s Engineers Week 2019, American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Los Angeles Younger Members Forum (LA YMF) hosted 105 girl scouts for Girl Scouts Day! The 2nd Annual Girl Scouts Day took place on Saturday, February 23, 2019 at the California State University - Northridge (CSUN).

The girls were welcomed by leads of the event, Flor Burrola - Civil Engineering Associate from LA Sanitation & Environment, Dominic Enero - Civil Engineering student at CSUN, and Anna Leidelmeijer - Program Specialist from Girls Scouts of Greater Los Angeles.

When the troops arrived the girls were split into three groups. Each group included student engineers and working professional engineers to help guide and mentor the Girl Scouts throughout the event, including the design challenge. Before the tour, each volunteer introduced themselves to the Girl Scouts. During the tour, the girl scouts were taken to the major buildings of the campus, classrooms, labs and they even got to see a live action robotics competition during the tour!

The girl scouts were able to enjoy lunch on campus, and after lunch they participated in a series of hands-on activities titled “Think Like An Engineer”. The hands-on activities included three design challenges; the helping hand (mechanical hand), pop fly (catapult), and a water collection device (rain harvesting). The girl scouts rotated so that they can develop each device for the three activities. Girl Scouts Day was a great day for inspiring future generations of female engineers! After the event, the girls received their “Think Like an Engineer” certificate so they can obtain their engineer’s badge!

The parents also participated by attending an Engineering Panel that also included a mix of student engineers and working professional engineers. The parents really got an insight from the panelist on how to encourage and support future generations to pursue STEM related fields. The questions asked related to college planning, career guidance, encouragement, and more! The day was fun for all that participated. Special thank you to all the volunteers and the sponsors who helped make this event possible. Thank you!

Thank you to our Gold Sponsor, Metropolitan Water District for making Girl Scouts Day 2019 possible, and thank you to both LA Sanitation and MWD for the fun giveaways provided to the Girl Scouts when the day was complete!
